For visionary filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, content comes first. His stories, humane and true to Indian lives, families and cultures, have resonated with audiences and critics alike. That Sircar, who has directed four Hindi films of which three have won National Film Awards, reflects his mastery over the medium. ‘Piku’, his 2015 gem, won Best Actor for Amitabh Bachchan, and Best Screenplay as well as Best Dialogue for Juhi Chaturvedi this year.

Shoojit Sircar and his partner Ronnie Lahiri at Rising Sun Films have collaborated meticulously to put together a team of creative and committed film professionals for their projects. Since their stories are heart felt, they have managed to bring together the best writers, cinematographers, editors and actors on board. Filmmaking is pure teamwork, and when a film made under the aegis of Rising Sun Films wins a National Film Award, it gratifies the entire film’s team, making them proud. In 2013, ‘Vicky Donor’ won Best Popular Film, and veteran actors Annu Kapoor and Dolly Ahluwalia won Best Supporting Actor (Male) and Best Supporting Actor (Female) for this cult film. In 2014, ‘Madras Café’ brought home the National Film Award for Best Audiography to Nihar Ranjan and Bishwadeep Chatterjee.

Speaking on the ‘Piku’ wins, Sircar said, “For us, any award or recognition for our film is a victory for the entire team. Response to ‘Piku’ has been overwhelming. That it has won top National awards, and Mr. Bachchan has won for that iconic performance, justifies the patience and effort we put in our projects. We are very grateful and very proud today.”

Ronnie Lahiri, co-producer of ‘Piku’, said, “When technicians and actors win a prestigious National Film Award for our films, it’s a dream come true. We have all grown up aspiring to this recognition, and when we actually win one, it’s very gratifying. We make films that we believe in, that are honest. “

As applause for the triple National Awards win pours in, Rising Sun Films is working together with Amitabh Bachchan on their forthcoming film, ‘Pink’. Directed by respected Bengali filmmaker and National Award winner Aniruddha Roy Choudhary, this one promises another special, delightful film that is bound to bring in pride and glory.
