The year 2016 started on a good note with Kapoor and Sons! What are your expectations with this film?
I am very optimistic about this film as well. Kapoor and Sons was a family drama in a new and contemporary way where people saw something different. And Baar Baar Dekho is a romantic film with a new age love story. So if I am able to pull off a family drama and a love story in one year, I would be really happy.
The trailer of the film is very similar to Adam Sandler’s, Click. What do you have to say on that?
The only thing common between both the movies is the concept of time. But once you see the film, you will be able to see how different both the films are.
How easy was it to break the ice between you and Katrina?
Especially in love stories like this, it is important for actors to get along well. So we did a lot of workshops before the shoot where I had to just sit and stare in to Katrina’s eyes for a while until she blinked (HaHa). She got distracted. Then slowly we started doing the scenes too. At that point of time, I realized how hard she works and how she doesn’t take her position in the industry for granted at all. That is a commendable quality and that is the reason why she is, where she is.
How much do you relate to this character Jai?
I relate a lot to Jai as he represents a lot of youth today. The youngsters nowadays are obsessed with career, money and position. He is a maths professor wanting to study abroad, give lectures and even though he has a girlfriend like Diya, he is still commitment phobic. How then he goes on the journey to see the future of his love story, does he come out as a changed man forms the rest of the story. In a way, not just me, a lot of youngsters now can easily relate to this character.
How do you see yourself as a 35yr old, 46yr old and 60yr old?
Reaching 35 is not far, just 4 more years. By that time I want to see myself doing better movies, producing the scripts I would like to make and have a balance between professional and personal life. If I find the right person, I would want to settle down and start a family. At 46, I would like to look like the character in this film and get all the appreciation people are showering on me. At 60, I want to be working and be fit at the same time. It would be amazing to still have creative juices in your head. I hate to sit at home and do nothing.
How tiring are the promotions for you? How much do you think promotion will help in recovering the initial?
Especially with a film like Baar Baar Dekho where you have to explain the concept, promotions play a big role. It is important to prepare the audience on what story the film is trying to say. Promoting a film is not so tiring for me, but I am just back from the Dream Team tour, so I look very tired.
Do you think our industry should stand together and bring a cut on the ticket rates here?
I think we should definitely do it. If a family of 4 has to go to watch a movie, they have to budget themselves, which is very sad. Also the taxes here are different so the government must collaborate with us to put a cap on the ticket pricing. It will help more people to come and watch the movies in theatres. Hopefully it should happen very soon.
